Midget Major 18U Team News

November 1st, 2014

The Colorado Thunderbirds U18 team completed the weekend sweep over the Rough Riders U18 team November 1st with the 3 - 1 victory.  After beating the Rough Riders 3 - 0 Friday night, the team took the ice ready for another tough battle.  

Friday night the Tbirds opened up scoring in the 2nd period with a 4 on 4 goal from CJ Dodero.  Jacob Tinker and Alexander Koumontzis added goals in the third period . The team held on to win with help from the penalty kill (4 for 4) and some big time saves from the Tbirds goalie Ben Roberts.

Saturday night the Tbirds decided to go back with Roberts in net.  David Marabella opened up scoring for the Tbirds on the power play with a great pass from Sammy Rappaport. After a back and forth 2nd period, the Tbirds started the 3rd on the power play.  With great effort from the Rough Riders' Cory King, he tied the game up short handed with a great shot.  The Tbirds were forced to go back to work in a close game with their in-state rival.  They answered again on the power play with a big goal from Jack Doremus.  Late in the period, the Rough Riders pulled their goalie and Marabella was able to get his 2nd goal of the game with an empty netter to seal the weekend sweep.

The Colorado Thunderbirds U18 team took on the Pikes Peak Miners U18 team for the first time this year.  With two big team wins, the Tbirds took over first place in the CAHA rankings.

Saturday the Tbirds played their first game at the South Suburban Ice Rink in Littleton, CO.  Right from the start, the Tbirds opened up play with an aggressive forecheck pinning the Miners in their own end. Although the Tbirds outshot the Miners 22 - 6, they were not able to find the back of the net.  After giving up the first goal to the Miners, Alexander Koumontzis tied the game up with a great shot from the high slot. That's all the Tbirds needed to get their scoring going as their next four goals were scored by 4 different players (Rankin, Carlstrom, Dodero & Peterson) in the 3rd period.  Tom Barendregt earned his second CAHA win of the season.

Sunday the Tbirds started right where they left off the night before, as David Marabella scored the 1st and 2nd goals of the game.  Rau netted the 3rd goal in the second period and the Miners couldn't catch back up.  The Tbirds sealed the win with a early third period break away goal from CJ Dodero on the power play.  Ben Roberts only gave up one goal on 22 shots against, to earn his first CAHA win of the season.  

The 18U Thunderbirds had a successful training camp August 15-17th.
